FADE IN:

INT.  OFFICE BUILDING – DAY

BELLA, a smartly dressed young woman carrying a briefcase, walks down the sterile, neon-lit corridor of a dingy office. She smiles at the receptionist, and waits for the lift.

INT.  LIFT – DAY

Once inside the lift her demeanour changes. Her smile disappears and she begins to look worried. Something is weighing on her mind.

INT. UNDERGROUND CARPARK – DAY

As Bella walks across the cavernous car park her phone rings. She rummages around in her bag to find it, resting her briefcase on the boot of a sleek black Porsche in the process. It is HEIDI, her best friend.

HEIDI (V/O)

So how did it go?

BELLA

Okay. Good, I think. They said my qualifications were impeccable.

HEIDI

When do you find out?

BELLA

Tomorrow. (beat) But you know, I was thinking-

2.

She is interrupted by the Porsche’s owner who is angrily approaching from behind.

PORSCHE OWNER

Hey, you know how much it costs to repair a scratch on one of these things?

BELLA

(To Heidi)

Gotta go, I’ll talk to you later.

She picks up her bag, glares at the driver and walks over to her car.

PORSCHE DRIVER

(calling out after her)

And what are you doing parking in here anyway, this level’s only for current employees!

INT.  KITCHEN/LOUNGEROOM – NIGHT

Bella is still wearing the crisp white shirt and blazer she had on earlier, but has swapped her tailored skirt for daggy pyjama bottoms. She microwaves a frozen meal and dejectedly watches the seconds count down. A red 0 flashes. She grabs her meal and takes it into the LOUNGEROOM. Sitting on the couch, she urgently phones Heidi.

3.

BELLA

It’s me again. Hey-when we were little did you really believe the garage was haunted?

She pours herself a glass of wine and waits.

HEIDI (V/O)

(after a long pause)

I guess it’s true what they say about full moons.

BELLA

Because I did believe it. And the elves in the treehouse. I mean, back then I had no doubt that there was something more-

HEIDI

What are you on about?

BELLA

You know, I’m just not sure I’m ready for a real job. When I was younger, it was like – I could see with more than just my eyes.

INT.  LOUNGE ROOM – MUCH LATER

4.

Bella has fallen asleep on the couch, cradling the bottle of wine. A full moon can be seen through the open curtains. Light from the TV flickers across her face. American televangelists can be heard spruiking their wares.

EVANGELIST 1 (O/S)

The verse I’d like to bring to your attention is Hebrews 9:27, which reveals, and I quote, ‘Man is destined to die once, and after that to face judgement.’ Well now, there are certain- can I say charlatans?

EVANGELIST 2

Snake oil salesmen, Jimmy, is what I title ‘em-

EVANGELIST 1

You’re right now Ray, there are plenty of unscrupulous folk who will tell y’all that there’s ways and means of seeing ghosts.

Bella stirs, and opens one eye.

EVANGELIST 2

That’s correct, they’ll tell y’all ‘by the light of a full moon’-

5.

EVANGELIST 1

(mockingly)

‘In a graveyard facing the sea’-

EVANGELIST 2

-‘the spirit realm will make itself known’. They prey on the vulnerable, Jimmy, people who don’t feel satisfied with what the Lord has provided.

Bella opens both eyes.

EVANGELIST 1

But the devil wears many masks, and Corinthians-

EVANGELIST 2

What does Corinthians say? (Audio fade-out)

Bella sits up, looking dishevelled but fully alert.

BELLA

A graveyard. Facing the sea.

EXT.  STREET – NIGHT

6.

Bella is stumbling towards the cemetery. The moon is still out, but sunrise is close. She makes her way to the edge of a cliff, and sits facing the ocean. Glancing up at a majestic stone angel, she crosses her legs, and waits.

EXT.  CEMETERY – DAWN

Bella looks exhausted as the first rays of sun strike her face. She sighs heavily, and gets up to leave. As she walks away her shadow is seen from the angel’s perspective, looming behind her like a ghost.
